Richard Bass was an American mountaineer and businessman known for being the first person to climb all of the peaks over 14,000 feet in the contiguous United States, which he completed in 1964. He gained further fame in 1985 when he became the first person to climb the highest peak on each continent, known as the Seven Summits. His ascent of Mount Vinson in Antarctica completed this challenge. Bass was also an accomplished author, writing about his climbing experiences and the challenges of mountaineering. In addition to his climbing achievements, he was involved in various business ventures and was known for his charismatic personality and passion for the outdoors. He passed away in 2015, leaving a lasting legacy in the climbing community.
